Frankenstein, from shelf to scan

From the barcode of a 2003 paperback to the 1831 edition, page by page: one work with 2,187 editions in Open Library's catalogue, and the oldest scan anyone can read for free.

Engraved frontispiece of the 1831 Frankenstein: in a vaulted room lit through a tall leaded window, the naked creature half sits up on the floor among a skull, bones and an open book, while a cloaked man flees through the doorway. Below, the word FRANKENSTEIN and a caption engraved in script.

The question

asked

I have a Penguin Classics Frankenstein, ISBN 9780141439471. Trace it back to the first editions on the Archive, and show me the oldest scan I can read for free.

The assistant looked up the ISBN in Open Library, followed it to the work and its author, counted the editions and the works about the monster, listed the work's scans and the earliest texts on archive.org, checked who may read them, and then opened the 1831 scan: its manifest, a page image, its OCR word boxes and its readers. Each section below names the tools that made it; all 16 calls, in order, with what each returned, are in the receipts at the end.

“Bram Stoker's Dracula omnibus” and “Dracula / Sign of Four” are in her list as the catalogue returned it. The first names Bram Stoker in its title, so we take the two Dracula titles as catalogue mix-ups, not as her work.

The 1831 edition, page by page

IIIF

The scan's IIIF manifest lists 394 scan pages, each with its size and an image address. Its catalogue line: “With: Frankenstein, or, The modern Prometheus / by the author of The last man, Perkin Warbeck, &c. &c. London : H. Colburn and R. Bentley, 1831; 26”. Scan page 6 is the engraved frontispiece, 1884 × 3074 pixels in full.

Under the engraving at the top of this story we read the word FRANKENSTEIN and an engraved caption: “By the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull, yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs. … I rushed out of the room.” with “Page 43”. No tool returned this text; we read it from the image (click the image to see it larger). The 1831 edition is in the public domain.

The frontispiece is cropped to the plate (region pct:8,13,84,84) and saved with the site at 503 × 820 pixels. The same crop, 1,600 pixels wide, is at a IIIF address that iiif_image_url built: iiif.archive.org/…/pct:8,13,84,84/1600,/0/default.jpg. It opens on archive.org's image server; this site loads no images from elsewhere.

Printed page ix, the 1831 introduction, as the OCR saw it: get_hocr returned 303 words with a box and a confidence for each; the first 80 are drawn over the top of the page. Hover a box or a word to see what the machine read and how sure it was.

Top of printed page ix of the 1831 introduction, headed INTRODUCTION, beginning: would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature, and awaken thrilling horror.

INTRODUCTION. IX would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature, and awaken thrilling horror — one to make the reader dread to look round, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart. If I did not accomplish these things, my ghost story would be unworthy of its name. I thought and pondered — vainly. I felt that blank incapability of invention which is the greatest misery of authorship, when dull Nothing replies to our anxious invocations.
